Lindsay and I visited the Pinnacles on Sunday evening for some play time. We started things off with a big watermelon Lindsay picked up at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday. Biting into a giant slice of juicy watermelon really makes it feel like summer for me.

After feasting on watermelon, and sharing some with a nice old couple and their dog, we started walking up stream. We momentarily freaked out when we noticed all the crayfish swimming around at our feet, and then Lindsay decided to catch one in her water bottle. The little guy was not happy to be removed from his rocky hideout.

He was released without harm after a few pictures were taken. The rest are a few randoms I grabbed along the way.

Friday Inspiration

To start of the picture story class this semester, we were tasked with finding some inspiring work to share with the class. Most recently my inspiration has been coming from the environmental journalism pieces I have been reading in my spare time. Lost Mountain by Erik Reece was an outstanding chronicle of the mountaintop strip mining crisis taking place in the Appalachian Mountains. While researching the issue online I came across the News 21 Battle for the Mountains project.

The video does a great job of combining video, audio, and photo pieces to tell the story. It is a long story, and couldn’t be used in one piece for most publications, but It gives a comprehensive picture of the issue.

James Balog is another great photographer who recently covered the receding polar ice in his work for the Extreme Ice Survey. He is using time-lapses to show the actual movement of ice over a two year period.

Sunday Baseball

Today was beautiful. I decided to get one more day of baseball in before the weekend ends. Mizzou ended up getting beat again, but at least I got some decent shots.

I went out and shot the Mizzou baseball game last night. Thankfully I finally managed to get some decent base action. More to come after my shift this afternoon…

Capitol Tea Partiers

There was a Tea Party rally at the Capitol in Jefferson City. I decided I mind as well head out and see what all the fuss was about, being as I had no Missourian assignments for the day.

It turned out that former President Ronald Reagan’s son, Michael, was there speaking. He gave a pretty typical speech, sticking to the regular Tea Party talking points, but I wont get into politics.

These people refused to give me their name. The man said he didn’t trust the newspapers. I asked him if that meant he didn’t trust me. “That’s right,” he replied.

The Black Lips at Mojo’s

I shot the Black Lips at Mojo’s a few nights ago. I’d never heard of them before the show, and I was pleasantly surprised. The light was pretty harsh, so I had to time my shooting to the flashing stage lights.

Freak weather

It was 65 and sunny yesterday at this time. Today it’s like snowpocalypse all over again. I was out shooting the Perche Creek Gutbuster Canoe race this afternoon, and caught this kid wailing snowballs into the river. He was waiting for his father, who also happened to win the race, to arrive at the turn around point.
